A group of students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, University of Maribor, invented a solution called 2nd Sight. This solution employs specially modified smart phones, making life easier and better for the blind and visually impaired. The students were among the finalists of the Imagine Cup in New York City, a competition with over 350,000 students from 183 countries. The Slovenian team was among the best 18 teams in the world in software development category.

A multi-disciplinary student group from the University of Ljubljana working under the umbrella of the National Institute of Chemistry entered the premiere undergraduate synthetic biology competition iGEM held at MIT and won first place among new applications, the BioBrick Trophy for the best DNA construct, and the Grand Prize for their project using DNA as the scaffold for encoding information.
